Madonna said there were days when she was exhausted during her recent "MDNA" world tour, but she decided to press on. You won't see those behind-the-scenes battles in her new concert film, "The MDNA Tour," which premieres Saturday on the online and cable network Epix. But you will see the 54-year-old pop icon performing mainly highlights from her Miami shows for two hours on her tour, which started in May of last year and wrapped in December. "There's no such thing as not in the mood because the show must go on, right?" the singer said at the film's premiere Tuesday night at New York's Paris Theater. "I'm a human being like everybody else, so I would have my nights, my bad nights and I would cry and I would say, 'I don't want to do this.'" Madonna told a feverish crowd of fans, her dancers, her tour team, socialites and members of press that she wanted her shows to be a relief for those paying to see her. "I sold the tickets and I can't let my audience down," she told the crowd of a few hundred. "Before every show everyone came into my dressing room and we got in a circle and said prayers and 50 percent of the time I said them and 49 percent of the time I was crying, usually from over-exhaustion. But there's something about pushing yourself out there when it's pouring rain or you're freezing cold or you don't feel well or something really crazy happened in the world like Hurricane Sandy." Madonna's tour, which included design help from her 16-year-old daughter, Lourdes, also featured her 12-year-old son, Rocco, as a dancer. "He was going to go on my tour whether he liked it or not," said Madonna. "I was thrilled to see him every night. He gave me a boost of energy. However, he does not look like that (now). In one year he has grown, he's 6 feet tall and his voice has deepened. I'm a little bit scared of him." Madonna also unveiled a secret project Tuesday a collaboration with photographer Steven Klein. She showed a one-minute trailer that featured her background dancers and showed the singer being dragged on the floor. She was answering questions before she premiered the black-and-white video and told the crowd she was leaving the stage so they could see it. "No," they screamed. "Well I can't sit in front of the trailer. I'll just do a stage dive. No. I saw the Billboard Awards no stage dive," she said jokingly, referring to R&B singer Miguel's jump that injured a woman at the awards show last month. Madonna's new concert film will be released on DVD on Aug. 27. ____ Online: http://www.madonna.com ____ Follow Mesfin Fekadu on Twitter: twitter.com/MusicMesfin

Q&A: Delving deep with Bosnian Rainbows

Bosnian Rainbows is a band that truly lives up to the phrase 'the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.' Since joining forces in 2012, The Mars Volta's Omar Rodríguez-López and kindred spirits singer Teri Gender Bender (born Teresa Suárez) from Guadalajara's Le Bucherettes, keyboardist Nicci Kasper (Kudu, KRS-ONE) and drummer Deantoni Parks (John Cale,The Mars Volta) have lived and toured together, developing an intimacy that's evident in their self-titled debut. The album features their take on synth-pop and new wave sounds with an emphasis on groove, while Gender Bender brings vulnerability and passion to lyrics that go deep into your soul and never let go, not that you'd want them to. A week before they hit the road again, we had the pleasure of speaking at length with Omar and Teri about everything from the band, human perception, sexuality and what it means to be a Latino/a in 2013. WARNING: It's a long read but worth every second! Where did the band name come from? When I saw it I thought about the general association with Bosnia, war and rainbows make you think of something positive then my mind went to darkness and light, which also seems to describe your music pretty well. Was it something that was that thought out or spontaneous? Omar: I think the subconscious mind does a lot of work when a lot of themes are prevalent that you think about in the conscious mind. The interesting thing is it’s a all thing of perspective, really. A rainbow is completely individual to a person, science proves that. The rainbow that I see doesn’t look like the rainbow you see. Rainbows are also circular, that’s another perspective thing, we think of them as arcs so we’re not getting the full story, same thing with Bosnia. Most people think about war but that’s only due to their lack of knowledge. One of my favorite filmmakers Emir Kusturica is from Bosnia, before the war they were very much known for their literature. Same with the Germans, the Germans were renowned for their literature and great thinkers up until the 1930s when Mr. Hitler came along. So it’s all a matter of perspective, research and analysis, and the fact that we’re all given the right to create and shape how we view the world, you know? Did you guys come up with it together or did it come from you? That’s irrelevant, really. The thing is that we all gravitated towards it and everyone felt that it was something that spoke to them. When you’re coming up with names for bands or any project, one of the toughest things is that when it’s a group effort it has to be something everyone feels they can fight for because it’s going to give a personality to a band and you have to carry it. A lot of times people want to focus on who or where it came from, the most important thing, really, is what the name is saying because when you realize that or you make your own assumptions about what that is then you can also make assumptions about the individuals in the group and what their cause is, for lack of a better word, not that we have cause or anything. You’ve mentioned previously that the music is a byproduct of the band’s togetherness; you do everything together, you’ve lived together. Are you still living together? We’ve been living together since the band started. Right now, this week that we have in between tours is the first time we haven’t been together because everyone has gone to see their families. D went to Atlanta to see his family and Nicci went to see his family on the East Coast but in between every other tour, there’s been months or weeks where we’ve chosen a city and just gone and lived together. How does all this translate to the live performances? When some bands are together on stage there’s just a certain energy, it’s somewhat inexplicable but somehow you can tell that those people have a connection, they weren't just together for the sake of making money. Just like you said, it’s something that’s hard to put into words, you just know it. I think that’s the best explanation because again, our minds are perceiving things whether we know it or not and we get a certain feeling about things. This is why it’s important for people to understand that the process is everything. When you hear a record, what’s actually coming out of the speakers, the music itself is the process, you’re hearing what the people were going through as they made the record. That’s why somebody can listen to a record and, not know anything about the people, say, ‘I didn’t like it, they sound like they were just phoning it in’ or ‘I felt like they were just going through the motions.’ That’s not coming out of nowhere, that’s very much a thing of human minds connecting and perceptions and the human spirit because, like you said, it’s inexplicable but yet you can tell. You might see a band play and they might, on the surface, be giving everything that says 'we love each other' and be all smiling but something tells you, ‘You know what? I don’t buy it.’ You can go see another band and they’re not necessarily giving you all the signs, the Disney Channel smile and everything else but you see them and you think, ‘Holy shit! This is the real deal!’ I’m saying this from my experience, I’m not talking about us, I’m just saying we connect in this way because I can see a band and within a couple of minutes say this is the real deal or this speaks to me or here’s another group trying to make money. The album has a post punk/80 new wave kind of sound. Your previous work has been influenced by some many different styles spanning so many eras like the golden age of salsa or 80s hardcore punk. Why is this specific sound so prevalent on this album? It was a desire to do something elemental and stripped back, something much more sensitive. I’ve been answering that question in interviews for 15 years now and I’m to the point where I’m trying to get people to understand that influences will always remain the same because at our core what speaks to us, speaks to us. So in terms of the past, there’s nothing [in Bosnian Rainbows’ music] that wasn’t there in whatever Mars Volta music or At the Drive-In music. Any of the greats will always be the greats, that’s why they’re amazing because they have a depth to them. As one grows older one can enjoy them when you’re 15 or when you’re 40. Now, how we view them or why we go back to them and study them lends itself to the individual circumstance. My individual circumstance right now is that I just came out of doing ten years of very complicated compositions, very long songs, a lot of instrumentation and arrangements, writing parts for orchestras. You go one step further back, I came out of a traditional based group which had two guitars, bass, drums and the songs were shorter. Everything has a reaction to what came before it so I was doing that at At the Drive-In, the next logical step was to do something I never thought I could do before and write parts for an orchestra to play and these long compositions and intricate parts. After doing that, I want[ed] to do something even simpler than I was doing 15 years ago with At the Drive-In. So you look at all the same influences and you take something else away from them, revisit records under a different mind which means your ears are different and your eyes are different. Revisiting Led Zeppelin or Siouxie Sioux & the Banshees or a salsa record like a La Sonora Ponceña record, look at the bolero. I’ve never paid attention to it as much as I do now. ‘Look its only two chords, how do they make it sound like it’s more than two chords?' You see what I’m trying to say? I’m sorry I went about it in a roundabout way, that’s how my mind works [laughs.] Yeah, it’s like music you’ve been listening to your whole life, going back to it with new ears and always learning something new from the same music. Given your circumstance at the time. Exactly. So yeah, the post punk stuff, it’s always there. Teri, you've said your bandmates are like uncles that you’re learning from every day. Can you elaborate on that and your experiences working with them as a musician? Teri: Well, I don’t consider myself a musician at all because I can’t even read music but I think what I was referring to was much more on a personal level because they’re older than me, guys in their mid-30s so by default they’ve lived longer than me and they all come from different backgrounds which means they have a lot of different cultural stories. I like to consider myself not a writer but I like to jot things down and just hearing their stories, it’s changed me in so many ways, most importantly as a person because I come from Mexico and I only have my side of what life is. Meeting people that come from different areas of the world is really cool, it just opens up my mind in so many ways. I thought I was liberal but oof! It seems from what I’ve seen of your interviews together and video tour diary, there’s an obvious connection between you all. It’s good that it gets out there. It’s like if a stranger is going to come and get the feel for it, my mother is definitely going to get a feel for it. She loves watching those videos because I don’t really get to see her as much but the videos she sees online, she says ‘I feel like I’m there!’ It’s good that she understands that I’m not doing drugs or partying, that’s what a lot of people’s perception of tour is but no, it’s quite the opposite, it’s a handful. So the videos work a great as a way of reaching out to your families and fans since you spend most your time with the band? That’s it. I can only think of my family and friends because, to me, I’m still in shock that there are people that I don’t know watching these videos. I hear you telling this it’s like I’m dreaming, it feels crazy like you’re in my consciousness! But I don’t think I’m accustomed to the idea of strangers watching these videos and liking them so the only thing I can think of is my family. I hope they will understand what they see and so far it’s been good like when my mom calls me up she knows some inside jokes that people won’t understand and it’s good to laugh about and not feel alienated from her. Sometimes when you’re doing a thing on your own, you tend to isolate yourself, whether you like it or not, from your family and your friends so helps out a lot. As a singer, you’ve been compared to the likes of Siouxie Sioux and Kate Bush, how do you feel about these comparisons? Oh my god, that’s blasphemy! When people tell me about this I’m like ‘No, no’ it’s only insulting to them. Oh give yourself some credit, Teresa! [laughs] [Laughs] You’re sweet! I don’t believe it! Of course it feels great but again there’s that voice that says ‘poor women!’ Maybe it’s because of my age, maybe with age it’ll change. To throw more laurels at you, you’re one badass frontwoman. Your stage presence is very unpredictable and of the moment. Is there anything going through your mind while performing? Oh yeah, everything is going through my mind. [Especially] the very important things like [being] aware of what I’m doing because before in my other band Le Bucherettes I was very, ‘oh I could care less, I’m only 20’ and I didn’t think about my surroundings so a lot of the times I would fall off the stage and actually get hurt which means I would put my mom through hell. She worried so much for me and on top of everything her thinking I could get killed on stage was horrifying to her so I had to learn to tame that inner rage. When someone is getting hurt on stage I’d like to think that they’re not okay with themselves so instead of pointing fingers I learned to look inside myself, as corny as it sounds. Being with Nicci, D and Omar, Matt our sound engineer, Thomas our tour manager, being with all these great people all the time, I’ve learned to and talk and listen. The more I listen, the more I feel like I’m learning, therefore, by default I feel less angry. So on stage, I have to be conscious but at the same time, on a spiritual level, I can feel my father. He passed a while ago so it’s kinda crazy, it’s like being in limbo. It’s hard to explain but I feel like I’m in this limbo where I have to be conscious but part of me is with my father. I don’t know it’s crazy and kind of scary. I know you’ve had strong opinions about how Latino men see women as meat so I wanted to know how in a world where sex in music is normally used as a tool to sell, what’s your opinion on sex appeal used as tool to sell sex vs. a side effect of a woman being open and comfortable in her own skin? That’s a beautiful question! Finally someone asks me about that. The first example I thought of was Girls the show on HBO and how Lena Dunham takes her clothes off but it’s nothing degrading and doesn’t play as a sex object, at least to me it doesn’t. She’s so accepting of her body and her sexuality and even comical about it which is why so many people can relate to that, she’s just a girl. I found out recently a porn company made a sex series based on Girls and that was horrible. One time I jumped off stage and this one person took their iPhone and zoomed in right at my crotch and oh my God, maybe I’m too young or naïve to think that people would do that – they’re at a concert, they’re liberal and accepting of women’s rights but no, there’s always going to be an a**hole anywhere, even a woman, because it’s not a [gender] thing, it’s an etiquette thing. They put that online and mom saw it and we went crazy. The thing is that she got upset about that and not over me posing, just being comfortable in a magazine showing some skin because I chose to but when someone does something and uses it against you to be like ‘Oh look at me! This is my trophy’ thing, that’s just disgusting. Sexiness is just accepting yourself and just being yourself. If you’re self-accepting, you’re going to be accepting of others. You’re not going to be judgmental as you as are when you’re in the closet about some issue inside your head. That’s what I try to do on stage. I’m curious about what being a Latin means to you both right now. It seems like when it comes to mass marketing, there’s still a lot of pigeonholing, they can’t seem to grasp the concept that even though we share a language and have similarities in culture, we are all different. Omar: I think you hit the nail on the head that we’re all so different and we’re being into certain characteristics which on hand is fine, stereotypes exist for a reason and generalities exist for a reason. I want to start by saying before being Latino, I’m just a spirit. That means in this lifetime I’m a person of this world so that’s first and foremost meaning that you can find a saint in any culture and a rapist in every culture. [There’s also] a very fine line between being very proud of your roots and where you’re from, which I am, and getting a sense of complete blind nationalism. So that thing is always delicate but my roots and the things I was brought up with -- my culture and my parents, my mother most importantly -- are the most important things anyone can have because they’re your roots, your filter. No matter what you go through in life that filter is always on. In fact, for some people it’s a negative filter and they have years and decades of therapy trying to get rid of the filter or trying to understand or come to terms with the fact that they’re mother didn’t love them. The quintessential thing, a baby knows when it’s in the womb whether its mom wants it or not so that affects the rest of your life. But for me, luckily, I was raised with great parents within a great culture so my circumstance dictates that I absolutely love my culture for all the good and all the bad. What I’m trying to get at is that there’s this huge sense to tour the world and represent Puerto Rico, represent Latin America in general because how diverse our careers have been. Someone could say ‘Oh this stuff doesn’t sound to me like someone from Latin America would sound like’ because again going on generalities when people think of Latin music there has to samba in there or some kind of percussion which I’ve had before, of course, but those are on some songs, you know? I like the fact that we can go out there and showcase that it all doesn’t have to be cumbia or samba in order for it be Latin music. We’re perfectly capable of going out in a diverse amount of fields: in science, philosophy, painting, music, literature, and break molds of our traditions while still having that filter. Boleros are usually in a minor key and they’re usually in six as a result of that, most of my music is a minor key and in six. I didn’t realize this until somebody pointed it out to me on a technical level, that it’s [because of] my upbringing with boleros. It’s super important to be able to showcase that we’re a people governed by the same obsessions and preoccupations that any other culture is governed by. So we have our critical filter which is where we come from: the foods, the sound of the jungle if you’re from the Caribbean, the sound of the desert if you’re from another part of Latin America. At the same, we have all the possibilities in the world to, I don’t know if the word is to break free of that because it’s not something to break free from but just to evolve and let it be worldly. Regardless of where we’re from, our obsessions are the same. So even if I grew up speaking Spanish, a very particular type of Spanish, Caribbean Spanish, Puerto Rican Spanish, the things that I’m trying to transmit as a writer or any human being expressing themselves, are the exact same things that somebody, a woman in Japan, for example, is trying to talk about, that’s what I mean by being worldly. Regardless of where you’re from the themes are the same: love, life, death, sex, God. There are many variations under that but those are the main ones, everything else under that falls under that cause other revolutions in thought. That’s a very longwinded way of saying I’m glad we can go out there and we can showcase all sorts of different sounds and remind the world, yes, we’re Latino but you should start to re-educate yourself on what exactly that means to you because it’s 2013 and we’re about to become the majority within another couple of decades in America, which is exponentially mostly Mexico, really. What does it say in terms of moving culture forward? What does it say in terms of scientists, artists, athletes and what is your definition of Latino because, I’ll tell you something, it’s changing at a very rapid rate and we have all the access to all the same technology and information [as everyone else], it’s a different age not the 1930s, you know? Teri: I agree with what you’re saying, it all varies. It’s not just black and white [and] it’s a beautiful culture that I grew up in. Funny enough, I grew up in Denver, we had no other family there it was just me, my mom, my dad and my two younger brothers so I wasn’t raised as a typical Latina, who knows what a typical Latina is but it was an isolated factor where we only spoke Spanish in the house and when we would go to school it would be like ‘okay, so now you have to bring out your English you.’ So in a way, when I was growing up I was kind of ashamed because in my school there was a lot of racism and when they found out I spoke Spanish, a lot of people due to their ignorance of what Mexican is, they were like “You’re not Mexican, you’re white!” I had people my whole life in Denver convincing me that I wasn’t Mexican, that I was white because of my fair skin. When I moved to Mexico, it was the opposite, it was just people mindf***ing you all the time, your identity, people tell you who you are your whole life. I’m very passive aggressive [and] back then at school I wanted to be liked so I kept my mouth shut and I was like ‘yeah, sure, I’ll be whatever you want’ but people noticed that I was weird so I was a loner and all I had left was my language, Spanish. I think that’s what saved me because when people turn their back on you is when you have the time to reflect on why things are going so wrong. I was just saying yes to whatever people wanted me to be and it’s not until recently that it dawned on me I’m super lucky to get to speak two languages, have two passports. In Europe, I didn’t know this before but people there love Mexico. I find it beautiful that in other counies people would kill to meet Mexican people or Latinos, in general, but I’m just speaking from my experience. My whole life people have made me feel guilty about those two sides, double nationalities and that’s on a personal, psychological level but I’m proud of it now and screw everyone at school when I was little for saying the contrary. You guys are about to head out on tour again. What are you expecting this time around? Teri: I just can’t believe we’re touring a lot. It feels like like wow, we get to go to these different countries and learn about culture, every country we go to we try to suck in as much as we can. It’s like sucking the milk from the teat of the cow, you have to do that, take the opportunity to [nourish yourself culturally]. My whole like I’ve been wanting to travel, it what people save up to do and it’s like wow, it’s my job? Cool! I’m just grateful. Since joining forces in 2012, The Mars Volta's Omar Rodríguez-López and kindred spirits singer Teri Gender Bender (born Teresa Suárez) from Guadalajara's Le Bucherettes, keyboardist Nicci Kasper (Kudu, KRS-ONE) and drummer Deantoni Parks (John Cale,The Mars Volta) have lived and toured together, developing an intimacy that's evident in their self-titled debut. The album features their take on synth-pop and new wave sounds with an emphasis on groove, while Gender Bender brings vulnerability and passion to lyrics that go deep into your soul and never let go, not that you'd want them to. ...

He really is more than a businessman. Jay-Z's partnership with Samsung for his new album, "Magna Carta Holy Grail," is another sign of how musicians are finding new ways to push, sell and promote their music, and how the multiplatinum performer who famously rapped "I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man" continues to leverage his enduring popularity into a successful brand. Jay-Z will give his new album to 1 million users of Galaxy mobile phones on July 4, three days before the album's official release date. The 43-year-old broke the news about his twelfth album in a three-minute commercial during the NBA Finals. Details about the Samsung-Jay-Z deal, announced Sunday, weren't disclosed and both parties did not grant interviews. But Jay-Z's partnership is just another way artists are promoting their music at a time when album sales are low and the digital market has taken the lead in the music industry. Jim Donio, president of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM), said top level acts like Jay-Z and Taylor Swift have the power to launch new albums in spectacular ways with various partners. "For an artist whose album release is an event in itself ... they carry with them a much wider profile in the marketplace that they speak to, so their audience and all the things that they do affords these unique opportunities," he said. In 2011, Lady Gaga sold 440,000 copies of her "Born This Way" album on Amazon for just 99 cents when it was on sale for two days, helping the album sell 1.1 million in its debut week. Others have also used that trend to sell albums, though not in its debut week: Last year, Phil Collins' greatest hits jumped into the Top 10 at No. 6 its peak when it was sold for 99 cents for a day. And Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wop & Hooligans" and Demi Lovato's "Unbroken" both jumped about 100 spots on the Billboard chart when they were on sale for 99 cents months after they were released. Taylor Swift, one of the top sellers in music, had her second platinum-debut week with "Red" last year. Her partnerships for the album included Target, Walgreens and Papa John's (you could order a pizza and a Swift album at the same time). "Even if you didn't purchase the CD, her face was still on the pizza box," Donio said. And Prince released his "20Ten" album in 2010 via the Daily Mirror newspaper in United Kingdom. Jay-Z's new partnership is one of his many business deals. His Roc Nation agency, which manages Rihanna, Shakira and other musicians, recently expanded into the sports world, and he now is helping the careers of New York Yankee Robinson Cano, New York Jets rookie Geno Smith and others. Jay-Z has launched fashion lines, has a string of 40/40 nightclubs, was also the president of Def Jam and owned part of 1 percent of the Brooklyn Nets. He's still a consistent hit maker and a superstar who transcends music which is why Samsung likely partnered with him on his new album. Samsung has chipped away at Apple's share of the mobile market with its Galaxy phones, and companies are relying more on music to lure new customers (Apple last week announced it will debut iTunes Radio, its streaming music service, in the fall). One of the many questions about the Samsung deal still unanswered: Will the 1 million downloads count toward first-week sales of the album, giving it elite status of debuting with platinum sales, an accomplishment few artists have achieved? Billboard, which tracks album sales and chart information for the industry, did not return emails seeking comment. Samsung reportedly purchased the albums though it's unclear what the price-point was. Jay-Z made it clear Monday what he felt the trade publication should do. "If 1 Million records gets SOLD and billboard doesn't report it, did it happen? Ha," Jay-Z tweeted, adding: "Platinum!!!" Donio said he thinks more deals like Samsung-Jay-Z are on the horizon. "The record labels that are putting out the music and partnering with a variety of types of commerce outlets are going to look at just anything and everything that may work with that particular artist and that particular album release," he said. ____ Online: http://www.magnacartaholygrail.com/ ____ Follow Mesfin Fekadu on Twitter: twitter.com/MusicMesfin

Nicely done, Jack Johnson. Johnson and his band overcame tough odds and thorny logistics to headline the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival on Saturday night, replacing late cancellation Mumford & Sons. The group overcame short notice and thorny logistics to produce a set filled with good humor, mellow vibes and a ton of hits. "We want to dedicate this whole set to Ted Dwane and all of Mumford & Sons," Johnson said after taking the stage before tens of thousands of fans. "And we wish we could all be here playing music together. Maybe that will be next year." Mumford & Sons was forced to pull out of its much-anticipated headline slot on Thursday after bassist Dwane underwent a surgical procedure earlier in the week to treat a blood clot on his brain. The group had hoped to keep the date in Manchester. Though Dwane is recovering, he was not ready to perform and the group was unwilling to take the stage with a replacement, leaving a large amount of money on the table. There was much speculation among Bonnaroo organizers and watchers about how fans would react to the switch — the first headliner cancellation in 12 years of Bonnaroo. But Johnson quickly won over the crowd and kept its fickle attention with a light touch and his easygoing persona. "Give us that one," Johnson joked after a flub late in the set. "We practiced for a couple of hours." Bonnaroo 2013 turned out quite differently from what Johnson was expecting. He hasn't played the festival since 2008 and was in town to do a little light promotion for his new album, "From Here To Now To You," out in September, and to appear with his friends in ALO. He got a phone call Thursday as he drove to the festival from organizers wondering if he'd be interested in upping his involvement. After thinking about it, Johnson flew in his band, rehearsed some Friday night, attended a breakfast with fans in Nashville on Saturday morning and then prepped for the show. It's been two years since the four-piece played a long set, convening for just 45 minutes last year at Farm Aid. About the only thing that seemed the worse for wear were the 38-year-old Hawaiian singer's trademark curls, which unraveled in middle Tennessee's oppressive humidity. Heck, Johnson even had time to write a new song called "Bonnaroo" for the set, singing in part: "I had a late-night gig with ALO/It was very low stress, it was very low pro/But then the phone rang and things got strange/And my low pro was about the change/Can you get the band together in two days to play a show up on the big stage?/But I don't know, it's been a year or two since we played these tunes/What the hell, it's Bonnaroo." A little later in the set he incorporated Mumford's "The Cave" into a medley with his song "Go On," telling the crowd: "Maybe you guys can help us with this part." For those not into Johnson, there were plenty of other options on an exceedingly busy Saturday night that included appearances by British punker Billy Idol, Weird Al Yankovic and the Rock 'n' Soul Dance Party Superjam with Jim James and John Oates. Mumford & Sons' folk-rock cousins The Lumineers drew one of the festival's largest crowds before Johnson took the stage. It was so large, in fact, fans on the edge of the crowd couldn't hear the band's mostly hushed, acoustic songs. "Everybody be quiet, I'm trying to hear the band," one fan yelled as The Lumineers possibly performed a Bob Dylan song. R&B singer R. Kelly had no trouble getting attention, though. He began his post-Johnson set by bringing dozens of chorus members on stage for a rendition of his song "Ignition." Suddenly the lights went dark and Kelly was illuminated 40 feet above, standing in the basket of a crane that hovered over the Which Stage's distinctive question mark symbol. "They told me back stage there's no cursing here," Kelly told the crowd a little later. "I just laughed. I can't (expletive) curse?" Follow us: Twitter - Facebook

Even a former Beatle needs a moment standing on the main stage at Bonnaroo. A few songs into his transcendent first set at the massive Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Paul McCartney wrapped his arms around his signature Hofner bass and surveyed a crowd of 80,000 adoring fans. "Hey, listen, I'm going to take a moment just to drink all this in for myself," McCartney said. McCartney is one of the world's most recognizable musicians and showed why as he led a massive 2½-hour sing-a-long of three dozen songs that included two encores Friday night. Playing for a crowd consisting mostly of fans who were born a decade or more after the Beatles broke up in 1971, he lavishly revisited the Beatles, Wings and his own solo catalog, laying down hit after hit and playing two Beatles cuts he only recently began playing live for the first time "Lovely Rita" and "Mr. Mustard." McCartney, who turns 71 next week, acknowledged some cultural similarities between the generations, however. "That's some pretty good weed I can smell," McCartney said as wispy puffs of smoke rose from hundreds of spots in the crowd. "What are you doing to me?" McCartney took the time to talk about several songs, explaining his Beatles classic "Blackbird" was written about the civil rights struggle in Arkansas. He noted songs he wrote for his wives over the years, took a moment to express support for incarcerated Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot after playing "Back in the USSR" and told a humorous story about Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. He also paid tribute to late Beatles members John Lennon and George Harrison. Drummer Ringo Starr and McCartney are the only surviving members of the genre-defining British rock band. McCartney kicked off Harrison's biggest hit "Something" on the ukulele, playing in an unfamiliar time signature that gave the song new meaning, before strapping on a guitar to finish the song. And he played "Here Today" for his old songwriting partner Lennon, a song he wrote after Lennon was shot to death in 1980. McCartney warned members of the crowd to never hold back their feelings, as he did with Lennon after the group broke up. "That's it," McCartney said after finishing the song on a baby grand piano. "If you wait to tell someone you love them, it's too late." The set only seemed to pick up speed as the night edged toward midnight. With the crowd yet to diminish, he played "Live and Let Die" accented by onstage pyrotechnics and fireworks. The entire crowd joined in on "Hey, Jude" before McCartney and his four-piece band left the stage. He returned waving a Tennessee state flag and played a three-song encore that included "Day Tripper" and "Get Back." He returned for a second encore that included a rollicking version of "Helter Skelter." A member of the crowd tossed McCartney a stuffed toy walrus, alluding to a cryptic nickname given to him by Lennon, and McCartney concluded his first show at Bonnaroo by singing "Carry That Weight" to the toy he placed atop his piano. ___ Online: Http://paulmccartney.com ___ Follow AP Music Writer Chris Talbott: http://twitter.com/Chris_Talbott.

The remaining members said in a statement they are "very proud" to have worked with Deal. Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering also said they will always consider her a member of the group. The Pixies released their debut in 1988.
Festival officials announced the move Friday morning. The "Upside Down" singer last headlined at Bonnaroo in 2008. "I called my band and asked if they were up for it," Johnson said in a statement. "Long story short — they are headed this way. I've got a lot of lyrics and chords to relearn by Saturday night. I was here to play the first Bonnaroo, and it is a very special festival to my band. We are excited to hit the stage again. Get well Ted!" Bonnaroo 2013 Photos: Here are 10 must-see acts Mumford & Sons' decision comes after Dwane received treatment this week for a blood clot on his brain. The band postponed three shows in Dallas and Woodlands, Texas, and New Orleans after the blood clot was discovered but hoped to play Bonnaroo on Saturday night. Dwane has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering from the procedure but is not yet ready to play. Rather than perform with a replacement, the London-based, Grammy-award-winning folk rock band decided to pull out. The band also canceled appearances at the Telluride Festival in Colorado and a performance in Bonner, Kan., ending their summer tour early. "The surgery went well, and the excellent medical team helping him are very pleased with his progress," a band statement said. "He has been nothing short of heroic in how he has handled the whole ordeal, and now it has been medically proved that he does indeed have a brain." It was a case of being in the right place at the right time for Johnson. The 38-year-old Hawaiian folk-rock singer was in town to play with friends ALO on Thursday night. He also was already scheduled to be in Manchester this weekend to perform a small secret show for reporters and participate in a question-and-answer session to promote his new album, "From Here To Now To You," which is due out in September. Johnson has agreed to take the Saturday night headlining slot at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival after Mumford & Sons were forced to cancel due to bassist Ted Dwane's illness. Festival officials announced the move Friday morning. The "Upside Down" singer last headlined at Bonnaroo in 2008. "I called my band and asked if they were up for it," Johnson said in a statement. "Long story short they are headed this way. I've got a lot of lyrics and chords to relearn by Saturday night. I was here to play the first Bonnaroo, and it is a very special festival to my band. We are excited to hit the stage again. Get well Ted!" Mumford & Sons' decision comes after Dwane received treatment this week for a blood clot on his brain. "He has been nothing short of heroic in how he has handled the whole ordeal, and now it has been medically proved that he does indeed have a brain." It was a case of right place, right time for Johnson. ___ Online: http://bonnaroo.com ___ Follow AP Music Writer Chris Talbott: http://twitter.com/Chris_Talbott.

The 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony was full of star power that included Alison Krauss, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Nickelback, Petula Clark, Wiz Khalifa, Jordin Sparks and a video message from Bill Clinton. Tyler, Perry, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Holly Knight, JD Souther and Tony Hatch were inducted Thursday into the Songwriters Hall 2013 class in New York City. John and writing partner Bernie Taupin received the Johnny Mercer award, and Sting kicked off the night with a performance of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Sting also called John and Taupin "my two heroes." John, who was inducted into the Songwriters Hall in 1992, said songwriting is often taken for granted. "I don't mean this lightly, but when you get an Ivor Novello award or an American songwriter's award, it means so much more than a Grammy because this is where the whole process starts," he said. John also used the stage to try to clear his differences with Joel. "I didn't see you tonight Mr. Joel, but I want to see you," he said. Joel responded later when he was onstage with light jokes. "Is Elton still here by the way?" he asked. "Anyway, we're OK. Call me. It's the same phone number." Joel introduced Jones and Gramm, who gave the night's most rousing performance when they sang the Foreigner hits "Juke Box Hero" and "I Want to Know What Love Is," which had the crowd singing along, standing and swaying side-to-side at the black tie event. Foreigner also got a boost thanks to The Anthony Morgan's Inspirational Choir of Harlem. Petula Clark also stunned with her performance of "Downtown," which Hatch wrote and produced in 1964. Hatch, too, was entertaining on the piano as he sang a medley of tunes he wrote, including Clark's "My Love" and Bobby Rydell's "Forget Him." Hatch also provided the laughs after thanking Universal Music, who owns his publishing. "I hope that plug will get me more royalties in the future," he said. "I'm still under those 1966 contracts." Nickelback was impressive with their rendition of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion," which was followed with the rock icons singing "Walk This Way." Krauss was soft when she sang for Souther, and Patty Smyth was a firecracker when she performed "The Warrior" in honor of Knight, who has written hits for Tina Turner and Pat Benatar. "I want to dedicate this to all of my exes," Knight said before singing "Love Is a Battlefield" on piano. Robinson, who gave a lengthy, 15-minute introduction to Gordy, said he was recovering from inflamed vocal cords and hadn't performed in two months. Then he sang part of a new song he wrote about his relationship with Gordy, who he called his mentor, brother, sometimes dad and best friend. "Did you know all the joy you'd be bringing," he sang. Some of the cast of "Motown: The Musical" followed with a medley of classics. Benny Blanco, the 25-year-old who has co-written No. 1 hits for Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Ke$ha, earned the Hal David Starlight award. "They picked the wrong person," said Blanco, who has also worked with Khalifa, Nicki Minaj and Bruno Mars. "I'm in a room with people I should probably be serving food to." The event also featured a video from Clinton, who spoke about the significance of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" during the Civil Rights Movement. The song, performed by Jordin Sparks, was honored with the towering song award. The night also paid tribute to Hal David, who died last year, and Phil Ramone, who died in March. Follow us: Twitter - Facebook

One of the coolest things in the history of the Internet is happening as we speak: Two advocates of truth and human rights, Calle 13 frontman René Perez (aka Residente) and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, are hanging out, probably chatting and planning a song featuring lyrics submitted by Twitter users. Perez flew to London on June 12 to meet Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy where he's basically imprisoned to make one crazy idea come alive: At 5:00pm EST the two will appear live on Twitter and try to write a song with the help of his almost 5 million followers and anyone else willing to participate on the social media platform. His goal is to create a song adressing the 'media manipulation' that put the journalist in his compromised position. "We support [Assange] because he's a victim of media manipulation. He's been found guilty of making information public that we should all have had access to because we all deserve to be informed," Residente said in a statement. "He exposed a lot of people and they charge him for that when Assange isn't the one killing people. Whoever doesn't support him is fighting against their own human rights, fundamental rights." He announced the event yesterday with a tweet inviting everyone -- even the FBI -- to join them in this project saying, "Hello to the FBI! Here I am with Julian Assange founder of WikiLeaks. Tomorrow we'll write together. With You. 10pm London time.": Un saludo al FBI! Estoy aca con Julian #Assange fundador de @wikileaks. Mañana escribiremos juntos.
Jazz composer Terence Blanchard couldn't have imagined how timely his opera about a gay boxer would become when he accepted a commission three years ago. Blanchard's "Champion" with a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Michael Cristofer is based on the life of former world welterweight and middleweight champion Emile Griffith. Its world premiere at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis on Saturday comes just weeks after NBA center Jason Collins became the first active male pro athlete from one of the four major North American team sports to come out as gay. Griffith's greatest triumph came in a nationally televised welterweight title bout in 1962 when he knocked out Benny "The Kid" Paret by battering him with 17 punches in seven seconds, sending his rival into a coma. Paret died 10 days later. At the weigh-in, the Cuban-born Paret had angered Griffith by using an anti-gay Spanish slur. Thirty years later, Griffith was beaten and nearly killed after leaving a gay bar near Times Square. In a 2008 biography, Griffith came out and discussed being a bisexual athlete in an era when gays were not readily accepted. Griffith originally wanted to design women's hats, but was encouraged by his employer at a Garment District factory to take up boxing to support his family in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Blanchard boxes recreationally and first heard about Griffith from his friend and trainer, former heavyweight champion Michael Bentt. He was inspired to write the opera by a quote from Griffith in the biography: "I kill a man and most people understand and forgive me. However, I love a man, and to so many people this is an unforgivable sin; this makes me an evil person." An abbreviated version of the quote is used in the opera's climactic closing scene where an aging Griffith meets Paret's son to seek forgiveness. "I was just compelled by the whole notion of a person who could be that accomplished and not really share the moment of winning the championship with somebody that he loved," Blanchard said in a telephone interview from his New Orleans home. "I immediately thought of the first time I won a Grammy. My wife was with me and I turned around and kissed her without thinking about it. "It speaks volumes of where we are as a society and how we need to really check ourselves, especially those of us who call ourselves compassionate human beings." Benny Paret Jr. and Griffith's adopted son, Luis Rodrigo, are expected to attend the premiere. The 75-year-old Griffith, who lives in a nursing home in Hempstead, N.Y., suffers from dementia pugilistica after more than 100 professional bouts and requires full-time care. "So often we think of opera as being kind of irrelevant in many ways, but I do believe opera-going audiences these days ... want something more modern that reflects contemporary society," said OTSL Artistic Director James Robinson, who is directing the production. When Robinson took over as artistic director in 2008, he was interested in commissioning new works by American composers and the idea of a jazz opera came up. Gene Dobbs Bradford, who runs Jazz St. Louis, recommended Blanchard because of his extensive orchestral experience that includes writing scores for more than 50 films, including most of Spike Lee's. The 51-year-old Blanchard agreed to undertake the biggest musical project of his career in part to honor his father who could not realize his dream of being an opera singer in an era when companies didn't hire male black singers. His father performed with amateur opera groups, and Blanchard grew up listening to opera recordings at his New Orleans home. Blanchard knows his father would have been "overjoyed" to see that his son had written an opera performed by a largely African-American cast, including Denyce Graves as Griffith's mother, Arthur Woodley as old Emile and Aubrey Allicock as young Emile. An 11-year-old from St. Louis, Jordan Jones, plays Emile as a boy. Cristofer's first opera libretto tells Griffith's story in 10 rounds. "I saw in Emile's life the story of a man who was fighting to reconcile who he was inside with who he was in the outside world," said Cristofer. "He was a young man who wanted to make hats and sing and play baseball and instead became a famous and successful prize fighter. He was confused about his sexual identity and that confusion led to violence. That violence led to the death of another man." Blanchard describes his work as an "opera in jazz." His score for symphony orchestra and jazz trio uses the language of jazz its rhythms and harmonies but leaves little space for improvisation. He says his biggest challenge was learning how to write for the individual singers because each human voice has its own characteristics. While writing "Champion," Blanchard also took a new direction with his jazz quintet. The trumpeter's album "Magnetic," released in late May, features 10 original compositions by Blanchard and his bandmates that cover a wide range of styles from the driving bop of "Don't Run," featuring special guests bassist Ron Carter and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, to the spacey electronic haze of "Hallucinations," with West African guitarist Lionel Loueke. Blanchard hopes "Champion" builds bridges between the jazz and opera audiences. "It's also a compelling story and hopefully we'll start to engage in a more in-depth conversation about being universally tolerant in this country," he said. ____ Online: http://www.ExperienceOpera.org http://www.terenceblanchard.com

West has said he doesn't want to do any promotion on the record because he is sick and tired of radio, but his strategy seems to be working even better than radio promotion. Thanks to Stupid Dope, now you can take a look at the tracklist which is as minimal as the album cover and it includes just 10 songs.
Shakira has always been quite a candid lady with media, and in her most recent interview for the July issue of Elle magazine (on newsstands June 25) the Colombian powerhouse dares to go "there" and dish on her super hot soccer player beau Gerard Piqué, the boys from The Voice and what is next for her in the music world. Check out the best snippets here. Gerard Piqué restored her faith in God: "I think, if you can prove the existence of God, it can only be proven through love. I even had lost my faith for a while. I was becoming agnostic. And it was really hard, because I was always very religious, and for a few years, maybe because—it sounds so corny—I was not feeling the love like it was supposed to be, I started to think that there was no God. And suddenly I meet Gerard and the sun comes out." On why the relationship works: "He has his own world and that's actually one of the healthiest things about the relationship. I know that he's the one person who is with me not because of any interest other than the love that unites us. There's nothing I can offer him beyond my womanhood –does that word exist in English?" On her new baby boy Milan: "I'm still trying to figure it out. And I have a feeling I will try to do the same for the rest of my life. Some people put it like it's very idyllic, some people put it like it's a torturing experience, but it's not quite one thing or the other. It's like life – it comes with everything." On dealing with her co-coaches on The Voice: "In general, I think I've treated the boys with mercy." On what’s next: "I have no idea of where I want to go musically, but I'm fine that way. I don't need to remain faithful to any concept, you know?" See more photos of Shakira through the years!
Britain's summer music festival season kicks off this week with a line-up ranging from the Rolling Stones to Beyonce to exiled Tibetan monks designed to attract the modern festival-goer - a 36-year-old with a well-padded wallet. Music festivals have become an integral part of summer for British music fans with Bon Jovi and Blondie at the Isle of Wight festival this weekend, Slipknot and Iron Maiden at metal-fest Download, and Iggy Pop at Yoko Ono's Meltdown in London. But figures show a shift in the type of fans attending music festivals with research by website MSN this year finding the average festival-goer is aged 36 and expects to spend about 425 pounds ($665) on a ticket, transport, and food to attend the event. This comes as ticket prices have surged with the UK's biggest festival, Glastonbury, charging over 200 pounds ($315) for the first time this year, 95 percent up on the 2003 price of 105 pounds - more than 2.5 times the rate of inflation. Catering for the older crowd are older acts with musicians in the 10 top headline acts an average age of 39. British folk-rockers Mumford & Sons are the only top act this year to have released a debut album in the past five years. Research director James McCoy from market researcher YouGov said the costs had changed the crowd at big festivals with a survey finding 22 percent of festival-goers from last year planned to go on a holiday instead of paying for a festival. "People have less money to spend and many of the festival-goers we surveyed were turned off by poor weather and long queues," said McCoy, joking about the annual photos of Glastonbury festival-goers in raincoats and covered in mud. "There is clearly some backlash to higher prices and also to the commercialization of festivals. This won't significantly impact the industry although we might see some smaller, more alternative festivals emerge on the side." BETTER FACILITIES The changed demographic and increased competition for ticket sales has put pressure on festival organizers to provide for a more discerning guest who demands more than a burger in a field. Last year a list of music festivals were cancelled in Britain due to poor ticket sales and with adverse weather. Rob da Bank, founder of the 4-day Bestival festival hosting Elton John, Fatboy Slim and Snoop Dog on the Isle of Wight off southern England in September, said tickets were taking longer to sell as people waited to check the weather before committing. "But overall the scene is healthy with lots of different festivals on offer including more for families as 40-year-olds don't want to hang up their festival boots," he told Reuters. "However, running a festival in the 21st century has changed over the past 10 years and people expect far better service, from toilets cleaned twice a day, boutique camping options, and a wide variety of different foods on offer." Glastonbury retains the title as the UK's most popular music festival, attracting about 135,000 people who paid from 205 pounds ($315) a ticket for the June 28-30 event, with tickets selling out in a record 1 hour and 40 minutes last October. The festival aims to cater for everyone on its various stages with the Rolling Stones and the Arctic Monkeys on the main stage while hip house fans have Tyree Cooper, ravers get cult garage DJ Maurice Fulton and children have their own show. Glastonbury also include the Grammy-nominated Gyuto Monks of Tibet, signed to Universal's Decca Records, who live in exile in Dharamsala, north India, with the Dalai Lama. The monks, who last performed in Britain 40 years ago at London's Royal Albert Hall, will perform their chants in a 60 acre space at Glastonbury called Green Fields where festivalgoers can "participate in new and old ways of living". Drawing the big names has become key for the major events. Beyonce is slated to perform at the V Festival in August while Scotland's biggest festival, T in the Park, in July has Rihanna, the Killers, and Snoop Dogg on its roster. "Every year we have to spend more on marketing to stay ahead as there are so many festivals out there," said da Bank. (Reporting by Belinda Goldsmith, editing by Paul Casciato)

The headliners usually get all the ink and this year's group at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is definitely ink-worthy: Paul McCartney, Mumford & Sons and Tom Petty. It's the down-list acts, though, that make this a particularly strong Bonnaroo lineup with a number of must-see acts you ought to check out before they're so big you'll be standing at the back of the crowd watching them on the video screens. Here are 10 to see: Alt-J: This Mercury Prize-winning quartet plays angular pop songs that are oddly intoxicating. Like fellow Brits McCartney and Mumford, the group has a gift for sugary songs that are impossible to resist. Action Bronson: The burly, bearded rapper from Queens is poised to release his major-label debut later this year and has been whipping up a frenzy in London before returning to the states for Bonnaroo. Expect stage diving, East Coast harmonics and lots of naughty humor. Charli XCX: The alternapop princess has had the bloggers buzzing for a couple of years. Now she's attached to a worldwide hit she features on Icona Pop's "I Love It" and has the highest profile of her career coming into Manchester. Father John Misty: Former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman left the band and released his first solo album under this new moniker after several releases as J. Tillman. "Fear Fun" was on many year-end lists and it will be interesting to see how far Tillman's mostly hushed folk-rock will carry at Bonnaroo. HAIM: Los Angeles-based sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim form a girl group for the 21st century, mixing lush vocal harmonies with high energy, beat-oriented grooves that have won over a lot influential fans. They're managed by Roc Nation, recently collaborated with Diplo and Kid Cudi, and are working on a debut album. Jason Isbell: The Alabama-raised, Nashville-based singer-songwriter is the Americana community's cause celeb du jour. He releases his new album "Southeastern" this week, just in time to take his brand of Southern rock to the masses. Japandroids: Just when you think the two-man band thing has run its course, up pops Vancouver-based Japandroids, a band guaranteed to generate more decibels per band member than any other on the farm. Their soaring, anthemic rock is perfect for Bonnaroo. Kacey Musgraves: Bonnaroo has had its share of edgy country acts over the years and Musgraves keeps the tradition rolling. This champion of Nashville songwriters has the off-kilter, left-leaning world view that fits right in at the festival. Portugal. The Man: This Portland-based band of spacey rockers has joined with producer Danger Mouse on its fun new album, "Evil Friends." Fans at Bonnaroo will be hearing the new music for the first time. There will be buzz. Tame Impala: Australian rocker Kevin Parker is the premiere purveyor of freaky, fuzzed-out psychedelic rock at the moment. Last year's "Lonerism" was one of rock's most praised albums and Bonnaroo could be a defining moment.

MTV networks going back to roots for July Fourth

MTV, VH1 and CMT are going back to their roots on the Fourth of July. The networks said Wednesday they will throw a "Music Independence Day" party that day, showing videos and giving exposure to artists at a time it can be hard for them to break through to a larger audience. Each of the networks began their lives as music video channels but shifted to other, more lucrative programming through the years. Music programming is limited now a wee hours dance party on MTV, the "Jump Start" morning show on VH1, a weekend Hot 20 on the country-oriented CMT. Much of their music content now is concentrated online or on digital channels like VH1 Classic. "This harkens back to the core of these music brands," said Van Toffler, head of the Viacom Networks. MTV on July Fourth will have hours devoted to particular music genres, highlighting artists like Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. VH1 will show videos and performances from the likes of Alicia Keys, Pink and Maroon 5, and telecast a live concert that night from Philadelphia featuring the Roots and John Mayer. CMT will offer a "barbecue playlist" of artists like the Avett Brothers, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan. The networks are also offering emerging bands a chance to set up their own online pages on the Artist Platform and compete to have their videos shown on TV. Even if they don't make it on the air, it's good exposure and provides a gathering place for fans, Toffler said. If a bluegrass band earns enough to buy a new tour bus or a rap act purchases new equipment because of the exposure, then Toffler said he will consider it a success. At a time it can be confusing for fans to seek out new music, the special event emphasizes the networks' ability to curate material for fans, he said. "In part it is to remind people what an immersive experience we can provide so people can hear the music and the artists and the stories behind the artists," he said. There's not much for the networks to lose from such an event. The first week of July is traditionally the lightest week of the year for television watching, primarily because so many people are outside or doing other things. The networks will offer themselves up as soundtracks for Fourth of July parties. "It is a celebration and we hope we can do it more often," Toffler said.

Monday night's episode of The Voice finally got Usher out of his coach's chair and up on stage for a great performance of his song, 'Twisted.' As usual the entertainer showed off his incomparable dancing skills, shaming everyone with amazing splits. We would've have loved to see Shakira, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine get up there and show us what they got but I guess all the booty-shaking ladies took up all the stage space. Oh well! Last night saw the departure of contestant Holly Tucker, who was visibly upset and comforted by her fellow singers and coach Shelton. Tucker says, however, her elimination didn't come as a surprise: “It wasn't a shock,” a teary Tucker told TODAY.com after the show. “From iTunes (sales) I kind of knew. It's okay. All I have to say is just, if you want your favorite artist to stay in the competition, buy their single. It matters.” Check out Shakira, Usher and Blake rock on The Voice in the pics below: Follow us: Twitter - Facebook

Apple unveils music streaming service

http://music.terra.com/apple-unveils-music-streaming-service,e19d27b2ffa2f310VgnCLD2000000dc6eb0aRCRD.html

Apple unveiled an Internet radio service called iTunes Radio on Monday and said the service will personalize listeners' music based on what they've listened to and what they've purchased on iTunes. Apple said iTunes Radio will be available this fall in the U.S. It will be free with advertisements included, although subscribers of Apple's iTunes Match music-storage service will get a commercial-free version of iTunes Radio. That service costs $25 a year. In unveiling the long-expected service Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Apple enters a crowded field. Google Inc. started an on-demand subscription music service called All Access last month. Other leading services include Spotify, Rhapsody and Pandora. Apple was a pioneer of online music sales and is still a leader there, but streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify have emerged as popular alternatives to buying. Pandora relies on its users being connected to the Internet at all times and plays songs at random within certain genres for free. As with Pandora, iTunes Radio will let people create stations based on specific songs, artists or genres. So users can put in a particular song, and the station will play songs like it. Apple did not provide details on how the other songs will be determined. Pandora uses a formula to analyze songs based on musical and other characteristics. Users won't be able to type in the name of a specific song and have it play right away. Pandora doesn't allow that, either. That's something available through other services that charge monthly fees, including Spotify and Google's All Access. Analysts were lukewarm. "This is a nice free feature that lots of people will probably try out, but existing Pandora users won't have much reason to switch," Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at Ovum, said in an emailed comment. Dawson said a service that lets people call up specific songs on demand would have made a bigger splash, "but that would likely have disrupted Apple's existing iTunes business, and the music industry as a whole, too much." Pandora charges $36 a year for ad-free listening, more than Apple at $25. Pandora also has a free, ad-supported version like iTunes Radio. In February, Pandora capped free listening on mobile devices to 40 hours per month. Apple said Monday that its service would have no limits. ITunes Radio will also offer featured stations, which play songs that are the most-talked about on Twitter, for example. The service integrates Apple's Siri virtual assistant so that users can get information by speaking questions such as "Who plays that song?" Users can also tell Siri to skip songs, stop or pause playing. And they can ask to play more songs like the one currently playing, or buy them on iTunes with a click, Apple said. Pandora also lets listeners purchase songs, through either iTunes or Amazon. Apple said iTunes Radio will be built into iOS 7, the new software for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. That's coming this fall. It will also work with Apple's iTunes software on Mac and Windows computers. Pandora investors did not seem concerned about the potential Apple competition. The company's stock rose 37 cents, or 2.5 percent, to close at $15.49 following the afternoon announcement. It added another 12 cents in extended trading.

"If you can survive this, you can survive any festival. You are all survivors!" Cut Copy singer Dan Whitford exclaimed during the Aussie electro pop group's set at Goveynors Ball this Saturday. His comment was rightfully followed by a huge roar from the crowd, who suffered the wrath of Tropical Storm Andrea at NYC's Randall's Island for one wild, long weekend. The torrential rain and subsequent muddy conditions made the three-day event feel like a summer music festival intensive. Brits at Reading, Leeds & Glastonbury have had years of experience being drenched in downpours and slippery mudslides. Gov Ball's third year attendees, however, were novices to this mostly unpleasant environment but made the best of it for the sake of the music. Those who didn't not heed warnings to bring protective gear on day 1 were the most unhappy as the rain fell hard. Fun was had despite the conditions and acts like Poliça, Local Natives, Of Monsters and Men and Best Coast drew large crowds. Canadian dance punks Crystal Castles soundtracked a memorable dirty electro rain dance as the sky ripped open and the mud began to flow. Things only got worse from there and the much anticipated sets by Beach House and Feist were cut short while headliners Kings of Leon and Pretty Lights sacrificed their sets. Angry Kings of Leon fans received complimentary admission to day 2 where they trekked across the festival site-turned-giant mudpile to watch the band during their rescheduled 6:45pm set on Saturday night. Despite a few kinks during their show, the Followills played gloriously in the sun debuting "Supersoaker," a new song from their upcoming album, Mechanical Bull, and getting the crowd to sing furiously to hits like "Use Somebody" and "Sex on Fire." Later, Axl Rose put on an explosive show for his hair-metal loving fans during Guns N' Roses' set as fireworks went bang all night. Popping through classics like "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City" and more stopping only for the piano in "November Rain." North American rockers Divine Fits and Cut Copy had people shimmying and shaking their booties at the main stage, respectively. Over at the other three stages, hip-hop heavyweights newand old represented fully with some of the best sets of the fest. Harlem's Azealia Banks drove the crowd wild with the "Harlem Shake" at the SKYY Vodka Tent while. Charismatic Compton, CA MC Kendrick Lamar pleased his more than eager fans with favorites like "Backseat Freestyle." Co-headliner and Queens native Nas, who was rumored to perform the whole of his epic album, "Illmatic" went for a great career-spanning show. The quicksand-like obstacle course was mostly gone by Sunday, when the mud was mostly dry and packed in and the weather summery and nearly perfect. Foals and Grizzly Bear owned the main stage with their day sets. Oxford UK's Foals had a rocking set that reached its peak when singer Yannis Phillipakis jumped into the crowd, guitar and all, for their finale. Grizzly Bear's angelic harmonies fit the mood as the sun began to settle into twilight and the summer breeze blew lightly. British indie pop trio The xx came on with the sunset, drawing one of the biggest crowds of the fest to the You're Doing Great Stage. Lovers of the black-clad band were seemingly unphased by the leftover deathpit conditions on the grounds, caught under the spell of the gracious group's dreamy love songs for over an hour. Festival closer Kanye West arrived 20 minutes late but all was forgotten when he went all in on a highly-anticipated raw and visceral performance, opening with new songs "Black Skinhead" and "New Slaves." He previewed three more songs from his highly-anticipated new release, Yeezy: “Onsite”, “I Am A God”, and “Send It Up” among hits like "Jesus Walks" and "Power". During the concert, West revealed that he will not be promoting this album on radio or with endorsement deals, it's just "real music" that fans "can all rock to all muther f----ing summer." Now that Monday has thrust us out of the alternate universe that was Gov Ball and back to reality, we can look fondly at the mud still stuck on our galoshes, feeling our bodies' aches and saying 'I survived Governors Ball.' See pictures of the acts from the fest up top and check out all the music fans getting down and dirty in the mud in the pics below. Follow us: Twitter - Facebook
